going back to wanting to work for obama... hitting the stands is The Plum Book. for folks outside of DC, this is the politico's every-four-years-job-seeker's bible. it is a 200+ page bitty that lists all the jobs that will become available with each new administration. as i mentioned previously, there are thousands of roles that will be filled by political appointment... and then there are others. all told, the book has some 8000 opportunities listed. nuts? yeah, but there's a market for this book. the cool thing is that the book also lists the levels/paygrades of the folks holding the listed roles... so it's like a DC-ist's version of vault or glassdoor. you can take a gander o the book online here.
for recruiters in the DC area who hire politicos... it's a cold-calling dream. all these folks are likely on the market now, or are going to be soon once the transition wraps up. if you're networked in DC, you likely already know many of these playres. it's still a good resource though. does that mean it's easy to navigate through the book? not so much... it is afterall, a government publication... so if you can understand what the heck to do with it, see the snapshot below, more power to you. but maybe with obama as president, he'll help automate some of this and use web 2.0 in this venture four years from now... i'd love to see that happen!
